But even xp can have problems recognizing removable drives if you leave them plugged in while rebooting. make sure the removable drive is configured for fast unplugging rather than fast performace( right click the device in windows explorer, click properties, select it from the list of devices and click properties again, policies, optimize for quick removal-may be lightly different in 98 as this is on XP). This allows you to uplug it without clicking the safely remove hardware icon in the system tray, and may well allow windows to recognize it on reboot while its plugged in.
